Near Field Communication (NFC) has been around for over a decade — it powers contactless payments, transit cards, and key fobs. But at events, NFC is still dramatically underused. Most conferences still rely on paper badges, QR codes, and manual networking.
Eventbuoy changes this by embedding NFC chips directly into event name badges. Here's how it works, and why it matters.
What is NFC?
NFC is a short-range wireless technology that lets two devices communicate when they're within a few centimeters of each other. It's the same technology behind Apple Pay and Google Pay.
For events, the key advantage is zero-friction interaction. An attendee doesn't need to open an app, scan a code, or type anything. They just tap their phone against a badge, and everything happens automatically.
How Eventbuoy uses NFC
Each Eventbuoy smart label contains an NTAG213 NFC chip — the same chip used in contactless payment cards. The chip stores a unique identifier linked to the attendee's profile in our system.
When someone taps their phone against a badge:
- Their phone opens a web page instantly — no app required
- The tap is recorded with timestamp, location context, and both parties' profiles
- Both attendees receive an email with the connection details
- The organizer's dashboard updates in real time
The entire process takes less than 2 seconds.
Why not QR codes?
QR codes seem simpler, but they create friction:
- Attendees must open their camera app, frame the code, and wait for it to scan
- QR codes can be damaged or obscured on printed badges
- Scanning requires intentional action — most people won't bother at busy events
- There's no automatic follow-up — someone has to manually export and email contacts
NFC eliminates all of this. Tap and go. The connection is made, the email is sent, and the data is recorded — all without the attendee doing anything beyond a single tap.
Privacy considerations
NFC chips only transmit a unique identifier — no personal data, no location data. The identifier is meaningless without access to the event's secure database. Attendees can view all their connections and request deletion at any time.
The technology is GDPR and CCPA compliant by design. Data retention is controlled by the event organizer, and all data is encrypted both in transit and at rest.
The bottom line
NFC smart labels turn every badge at your event into an intelligent touchpoint. Instead of paper badges that end up in the trash, you get real-time engagement data, automatic follow-ups, and measurable sponsor ROI — all from a technology that attendees already have in their pocket.
